Microclimate Vitrines for Art Works with an Emphasis on Paintings on Wood Panels
The course will essentially be in two parts divided between morning and mid-day sessions, over three days.
Morning sessions will be led by Giovanna Di Pietro focusing on the physics of the microclimate vitrine environment, in particular on the effects of a closed system on the microclimate and on the material aspects of paintings. The primary session will focus on on wood panel paintings.
Mid-day sessions, led by Laurent Sozzani, will be practical workshops allowing construction of microclimate vitrines. After having reviewed the historical development of microclimate vitrines and the microclimate expected in a sealed space, participants will construct vitrines following two basic designs. The first one, considered the more suitable for long term display of paintings that utilizes the picture frame as the vitrine housing, and a second design, the microclimate packages, which is commonly utilized for short-term transport and or temporary exhibit.
Participants are welcome to bring small frames, with or without panel paintings, that can be transformed into a microclimate vitrine or small panel paintings, alone, that can be housed in a microclimate package. (Frames must be vetted in advance for construction suitability; and if utilized for preparation of glazing and other materials. This must be done in advance in discussion with Laurent Sozzani.)
Giovanna Di Pietro is lecturer of Physics at the Conservation-Restoration program of BUAS and has participated to a number of research projects on different topics including backing boards protections and stretcher effect, fading of motion-picture films, indoor air pollution in archives and libraries.
