Inpainting and loss compensation on paper conservation
Amparo Escolano and Rita Udina are paper conservators in the private practice, at their own conservation studios (Florida, USA; Barcelona, SPAIN).
In the course we will go deeper into the inpainting and infilling techniques on paper conservation. Theoretical sessions cover the criteria, materials and techniques, as well as tricks and study cases.
The practical sessions will teach how to inpaint losses with microcrystalline cellulose, preparing the several toning hues, as well as other conventional techniques (pulps and dyes). These sessions will give the opportunity to practice on inpainting and how to match color, sheen and texture by the addition of specific agents and/or techniques.
Participants are encouraged to bring their own brushes and inpainting media (watercolors) in order to achieve a much similar experience to their workspace. Study cases are also welcome.
The practice will be guided and supervised, but the exercises on original documents will be under the participants’ responsibility.
