Restorers operate directly upon the matter of works and objects of art bearing values of cultural heritage, so as to transmit them to future generations. They step in when ageing process, accidents or constant alterings due to overuse threaten to weaken objects of art and wither their original radiance away.

Such a demanding profession calls for various skills, ranging from artistic sensibility and historical culture to the chemistry of materials, the knowledge of ancient techniques, menial dexterity, comfort in using both the most traditional tools and the most innovative devices, from the graver to the laser. This profession requires first and foremost an immense respect towards the works of art, be they humble or prestigious, as well as an unfalteringsense of deontology.

While mainly working on public collections, most restorers work on an independent status or as heads of companies.
